I do not use painful "training" devices, fear, or intimidation to temporarily suppress unwanted dog behavior. **CONSUMER WARNING** Please, for the safety and well-being of your dog, educate yourself prior to leaving your dog with any trainer. Be aware that the dog training field is unregulated and education is optional. Some trainers who do not understand how dogs learn may use devices meant to inflict pain or fear such as shock collars, prong or "pinch" collars, choke chains, or loud noises in order to teach or modify behaviors without your knowledge. Every veterinary, animal behavior, and animal welfare organization opposes these training practices. Not only are these training methods inhumane and unnecessary, but they make behavior problems worse. They may temporarily suppress the outward symptoms of the problem, but the underlying problem has not been addressed. Think of it like a smoke alarm with the batteries removed. The sound may be gone, but the danger is still there. To further complicate matters, there is no standard marketing language. A trainer may claim to be "positive", but that may mean they feed treats AND use pain and fear inducing training methods. Dogs trained with devices that cause pain and fear learn how to keep themselves safe from being hurt and do not demonstrate creative problem solving abilities. Force free training methods provide solutions to the most serious behavior issues without the unwanted side effects of fear, frustration, aggression, or learned helplessness where the dog "shuts down" and doesn't do anything for fear of the consequences of making a mistake.
